Journal Better is an app for writing and thinking the way your brain works, more like an artist's notebook than a word processing document. It doesn't even have a "File Save" because everything goes in a database, not individual files that you have to keep organized.

You just chunk your thoughts in there as haphazardly as you think - which for some of us is pretty haphazardly :) Instead of keeping files or docs, you view/sort/arrange your data sequentially or in any other manner, according to your needs at that moment. Data is not a view, and visa versa (if that isn't too abstract a manner of speaking about it).

Journal Better builds upon features of mind mapping such as FreeMind or Xmind, but adds tagging like EverNote or OneNote. Journal Better assumes that your mind and your attention are scattered, and wants to help you keep your thoughts funneled towards your objectives with the least possible disruption.

Shown here with maybe 20% of it's designed features - and even these not working perfectly - it is "alpha" software in preview mode only. Please view the short videos from the help page if you want to get a better idea of what it currently does without downloading/installing it,

State of JournalBetter January 10, 2012

JournalBetter

Summary:

  1. You might need to close and re-open views to see your data after some of the buggier moves. Or, sometimes even restart the whole app.
  2. Undo/Redo still not implemented
  3. Documentation still in progress
  4. Backups may not be necessary any more, but they are both easy and fast.
  5. Maybe beta in a few months, eh?

Where things are and why we are summarizing many bugs in one place:

For 19 months we have been working on JournalBetter to both define what it does, and make it all work.

Help

Help docs for this ALPHA software are almost non-existent. These brief demo videos serve as our only current help documentation and will let you see the basic idea, although they are already hopelessly out of date and 40 versions behind the current release.

As of December 2011 documentation is just coming up on our to do list, first draft should be ready for our first publicized alpha release January 2012.

Teaser docs can be viewed here: documentation

FAQ

If I'm only going to try Journal Better once, is this the right time?

If you're only going to give us one try, later would be better than now. Our Alpha Release FAQ explains.

How can I get a bit more help on the installation process?

We adhere to standard Windows installation processes, but if the warning messages make you suspicious, maybe our Installation FAQ would help.

Current Release:

This is "Alpha" is software that is not yet ready for prime time - not even ready for a "beta" rating.:

Acknowledgements

If we do our job correctly, you will find very little that is original in Journal Better.

Put another way, after giving credit to everyone that has helped us, you should find very little left to give us credit for. Our job is to implement the ideas and practices that have become commonplace in this current world of software excellence. It would only be appropriate to acknowledge some of the many parties that have assisted us along the way.

Inspired By...

Just because we develop a program for your use doesn't mean we don't recommend other programs as better to use instead of ours - for lots of situations.

We're excited about the possibilities of importing from, and exporting to great applications such as FreeMind, XMind, EverNote, and even others such as Microsoft Word - as the market demands.

MIND MAPPING:

We're especially positive on these mind mapping tools and highly recommend them to anyone - the following are free, or have great free versions:

Known Bugs and/or Missing Features

We have way too many bugs and unfinished features to list them all here, but we'll list a few just in case it helps you avoid wasting time.

  • Starting Journal Better when another Journal Better is already running starts up, then fails.
  • Undo/Redo still not hooked up on virtually all commands
  • Paging of data is still clunky, though available in TimeLine View
  • Word-wrapping and similar ease of use functionality is missing
  • Drag and drop is still not implemented in some situations.
  • Exports to text, html, and freemind files do not reflect the order maintained in the UI view
  • If you edit data in which exists in many views there is no warning that cautions you that you are editing data that may also exist in another view
  • If you edit data in which exists in many views the refresh of the same content in other views is a bit shaky
